I have been studying public relations for just over 3 months and in my opinion social media is one of the most important areas of public relations. Social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Blogs etc can be used to share information, network and create relationships with individuals or organisations much more quickly than other mediums.
Social media has quickly become part of our daily lives. The majority of internet users will use some sort of social media. For example, Twitter has become one of the biggest social media networking sites with millions of users who follow one another to receive and share information about each other or their companies.
I came across a really interesting article titled “How to tastefully use social media at your wedding.”
The article suggests that a group can be created on Facebook for wedding guests to join to allow them to socialise online prior to the wedding day. This allows the guests to get to know one another before sitting next to each other at the wedding. This is a good idea but I believe at a wedding the guests should interact and get to know each other however if they have already done this before on Facebook then they may not talk as much in person.
The article also suggests that a shared Flickr account could be set up before the wedding. This is so guests can upload their photos from the wedding and share photos with other guests. The account details can be shared with guest on the wedding day . I think this is a fantastic idea as you never have enough photos and you get to pick your favourite photos from a larger bunch.
One of the best ideas in the article is live-streaming of the wedding. I think this is brilliant as I have family worldwide and live-streaming would allow me to share my wedding day live with family and friends who were unable to make it.
However the article also suggests the wedding could be tweeted about. The author suggests a chief tweeter could be appointed and they could tweet before, during and after the wedding to let other’s know what is going on.
I think this is not tasteful at all, a wedding and all the details and information about it is private and this shouldn’t be shared with the whole world.
This article provides evidence to how social media is co-operated into everyday life and how more and more events are being organised with the help of social media. I think these suggestions are really useful and one day in the future when I decide to get married I will use them.
